FAQs

Q: DOES THE ARMIS HELMET MEET THE BRITISH STANDARDS WITH A KITEMARK?

Armis helmets are certified to PAS015 and VG1 that are the latest British and European standards. The Kitemark is permanently secured inside the Armis helmet and should not be removed by the user.

Q: WHAT ARE KITEMARKS AND CE MARKS?

Polo helmets will need to meet the British standard PAS015 together with a kitemark and CE mark. This is an assurance of safety, quality and consistency. The kitemark requires random batch testing, meaning that the consumer can rest assured that each and every helmet is being produced in the same way. In addition, a CE mark is a legal requirement and all PAS015 helmets will have this.

Q: DOES THE ARMIS HELMET MEET HPA LEGISLATIONS?

All Armis helmets comply with HPA legislation as of January 2018. Armis helmets are certified to PAS015 and VG1 with Kitemark.

Q: WHAT IS MIPS TECHNOLOGY?

MIPS is a patented technology that adds a low friction layer between the head and the helmet, developed to reduce rotational violence to the brain on angled impacts. Conventional helmets are tested by dropping them vertically onto a flat surface and they are designed with that testing in mind. MIPS is designed to deal with how most accidents occur, with angled impacts to the head. MIPS changes the way we think about helmet safety.strainlevel_2015_white-background-screen

Q: WHAT TESTS HAS THE ARMIS HELMET BEEN THROUGH SPECIFICALLY?

The Armis helmet undergoes vigorous testing both physically and digitally. In order to pass PAS 015 The Armis helmet has passed the following tests to achieve the certification:

  • Shock absorption and hazard impact test
  • Penetration test
  • Retention system strength test
  • Test for effectiveness of retention system
  • Test for durability of quick release mechanism
  • Test for stability of helmet on headform
  • Test for lateral deformation
  • Peak deflection test

Q: WHAT IS THE DELIVERY LEAD TIME FOR A CUSTOM HELMET?

Deliveries from stock lines are usually made within 7-10 days. Non-stock deliveries are usually made within 28 days.

Q: DOES ARMIS SHIP OVERSEAS?

Authorised Retailers can ship Armis products overseas; they offer a worldwide delivery service.

Q: HOW DO I MAKE SURE MY ARMIS HELMET FITS PROPERLY?

To work properly, an Armis helmet must fit right and be worn properly. In order to offer you the best value and fit possible. There are 2 main sizes with a range of removable headbands that adjusts the helmet size to fit to your head. The Armis helmet is available in the following sizes:

Medium:

56cm (6⅞)

57cm (7)

58cm (7⅛)

59cm (7¼)

Large:

60cm (7⅜)

61cm (7½)

62cm (7⅝)

Step 1: (Sizing your helmet) – In order to determine the size you need, you can measure the circumference of your head. Simply wrap a measuring tape around your head, being sure to locate the tape just above your ears and keeping the tape level front to back. Once you’ve determined the proper size, you can check to make sure the helmet fits correctly. If the helmet you own now doesn’t fit on your head with just a little room between your head and the headband when the fit system is loose, you should replace it with one that does. You should always wear the helmet positioned low enough in the front to protect your forehead, but not so low that it hinders your vision. Once you’ve got a helmet that is the right size, and positioned it properly, you can adjust the fit as follows:

Step 2:  (Adjusting your helmet) Adjust the fit of the harness whilst wearing the helmet.  Insert the buckle on the end of the chin strap into the clip on the harness. To tighten the chin-strap, pull the slack downwards through the buckle and then adjust the rear straps, until the helmet is firmly positioned on the head. To undo the chin strap squeeze the clip together with your finger and thumb on the buckle clip to trigger the release mechanism.

Step 3: (Checking the fit) – Once you think the proper fit has been achieved, grab the helmet with both hands and twist it to the left and to the right. If the helmet fits properly, the skin on the forehead will move as the helmet moves. If it does not, the helmet is too loose. Also, grab the helmet with both hands and try to remove it by rolling the helmet forward and backward as far as you can. Make a serious effort. THIS IS IMPORTANT. If you can roll it off the head completely in either direction, roll it forward so far that it blocks vision, or backward far enough to expose the forehead, it doesn’t fit correctly. If you cannot adjust the helmet to fit properly according to these instructions, DO NOT USE THIS HELMET. Replace it with a different size or model. Once you are satisfied that the helmet fits correctly and that all straps are properly adjusted and tightened, take a short test ride. Pay attention to overall comfort and helmet stability while riding. If you have questions about fit, please contact your retailer who will deal with you directly or e-mail us at info@armispolo.com

Are there scratches to the paint work?

This is just cosmetic and highlights where the helmet has been in contact. Traditional helmets are covered in fabric and the damage would remain unseen, this highlights any potential issue to help the rider make a calculated decision whether to replace the helmet from general wear and tear.  However if the helmet has suffered a blow or impact it must be replaced immediately.

Should I replace my helmet after a certain amount of time even though it has not suffered any impacts?

A – A general recommendation of replacing your helmet is every three (3) years, but to replace it immediately if the helmet has suffered a blow or impact.

Once the helmet is compromised, replace it immediately. This is the best practice to keep the head safe. Helmets are disposable items and only need to work once. This ensures that the helmet will perform the best it can when it does suffers a blow, crash or impact.

Q: ARE THE REMOVABLE HEADBANDS MACHINE WASHABLE?

The headbands are machine washable. They must be washed with a low temperature (300). A machine dryer may be regularly used with a low Heat setting. No bleach product may be used. The garment is not colorfast or structurally able to withstand any bleach. The headband may not be commercially drycleaned.

Q: HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF MY HELMET?

Cleaning Your Helmet

Helmets are made of materials that can be damaged by many commonly available cleaners. Petroleum based solvents or cleaners are especially dangerous. They can damage a helmet so that its protective capabilities are significantly reduced. Many times this damage is not visible. For best results, clean the helmet using a soft cloth or sponge, warm water and mild soap (such as a mild dish soap).

When to replace your headband

This decision must take into account the hygiene and comfort aspects. You should get a Replacement in the following cases:
1. The internal lining of the helmet is dirty and/or worn out.
2. To guarantee the snug fit of the helmet on the head when the padding flattens out in places.
3. To adapt and/or optimise the fit of the helmet on the head with a choice of 3 different levels of padding thickness

Lice Removal

Yes, we said Lice! We get inquiries from day care centers or from people who share their helmets, and are concerned about lice infestation. Here’s a simple, effective way to get rid of them:

Step 1 – Do not use a spray of any type.
Step 2 – Place the helmet into an airtight plastic bag for 48 hours. Then, remove the headband and use a soft cloth or sponge, warm water and mild soap to clean the surface.
Step 3 – Discard the headband and plastic bag (keep bag out of reach of children due to suffocation hazard) and contact your local Armis retailer for replacement a headband.

Washing the headband

The headbands are machine washable. They must be washed with a low temperature (300). A machine dryer may be regularly used with a low Heat setting. No bleach product may be used. The garment is not colorfast or structurally able to withstand any bleach. The headband may not be commercially drycleaned.

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF MY HELMET BECOMES DAMAGED?

Helmets don’t last forever. If the helmet is visibly damaged (cracked outer shell, crushed or cracked foam liner or any other damage) don’t use it. Some or all of the helmet’s protective capacity is used up when impacted, and the damage to a helmet is not always visible. If you have any questions about your helmet contact your retailer who will deal with you directly or e-mail us at info@armispolo.com

Q: WHAT KIND OF WARRANTY DOES MY HELMET COME WITH?

Any Armis helmet determined by Armis to be defective in materials or workmanship within one (1) year from the date of original purchase will be repaired or replaced, at Armis’ option, free of charge when received at the factory freight prepaid, together with proof of purchase. Q: CAN I PAINT MY HELMET?

Armis does not recommend paints or solvents of any kind be used on the helmets. They can damage a helmet so that its protective capabilities are significantly reduced.

Q: HOW DO I STORE MY HELMET?

After each use, allow the helmet to air dry and then store it in a cool, dry place where it won’t get damaged. Use the Armis protective helmet bag to prevent scratches and general wear and tear to the outer surface.

Note that excessive heat can damage your helmet. For example, in direct sunlight a dark gear bag, the interior of a car, or an automobile trunk can get hot enough to cause heat damage (damaged helmets will appear to have uneven or bubbly surfaces). Therefore, when not being used for a period of time we recommend that the helmet be placed back into its box or case and stored in a cool, dry place.

If you have any questions as to the condition of your helmet please contact your retailer who will deal with you directly or e-mail us at info@armispolo.com concerning Armis products.

Q: DOES ARMIS HAVE A CRASH REPLACEMENT PROGRAM?

Armis currently does not offer discounts or replacement helmets after a crash. However please contact your retailer who will deal with you directly or e-mail us at info@armispolo.com concerning Armis products.

Q: WHY ARE THE PRICES OF ARMIS HELMETS HIGH?

Principally, Armis has created a new helmet completely from scratch. It is the first polo helmet to certified to British standards with a Kitemark and also be equipped with MIPS technology. As a customer you are buying a helmet that is truly innovative and that you can customise too, whilst other competitors have just modified existing helmets using modern materials. Polo is a very niche market and these costs are spread over the small market size.

On top of the regulatory and safety aspects, Armis takes into consideration the aesthetic appeal and comfort of each helmet. Armis starts out with the principle that a helmet aimed at protecting the head requires considerable design input and research work in order to achieve the objective of maximum safety. And not the opposite: i.e. start out with the marketing and pricing aspects and then try to design a safety product aimed at protecting the head. Armis chooses only the best suppliers of raw materials.

Q: ARE YOUR PRODUCTS ORIGINALS?

The Armis helmet has been completely designed and manufactured within the UK. We take pride in the authenticity of our products. If you spot a fake please report it straight away, please contact your retailer who will deal with you directly or e-mail us at info@armispolo.com concerning Armis products.

Q: “I DROPPED MY HELMET! DO I HAVE TO GO BUY A NEW ONE?

Generally the answer is probably not.  Helmets are one-use items, but are quite durable otherwise, at least the ones we certify. Frequent dropping or spiking a helmet on the ground, or other hard surfaces may eventually degrade the helmet’s performance.  Similarly if the helmet falls to the ground at highway speeds unoccupied, the owner must be aware that some degradation may have occurred.  In general, the real damage comes when the helmet contacts an object with a head inside.  Armis recommends that if you are participating in an activity that requires that you wear a helmet, you avoid hitting stuff with your head.  It can be difficult to readily determine if a helmet has been damaged, and the protective capabilities compromised without a thorough inspection by a trained professional.  Some manufacturers may provide this service or direct you to these others that can perform these inspections.  Armis recommends that if you suspect your helmet may be compromised, then replace it. If the helmet has been involved in an impact while in use, replace it.

Q: DO YOU MAKE HELMETS FOR DIFFERENT HEAD SHAPES: ROUND VS LONG OVAL?

All heads come in different shapes and sizes. Armis helmets are designed to fit different head sizes. Try on different sized headbands to get the best fit. Please see the size guide for more information.

Q: WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF CONCUSSION?

Concussions can be difficult to diagnose. Though you may have a visible cut or bruise on your head, you can’t actually see a concussion. Signs may not appear for days or weeks after the injury. Some symptoms last for just seconds; others may linger.

Concussions are fairly common. Some estimates say a mild brain trauma is sustained every 21 seconds in the U.S. But it’s important to recognise the signs of a concussion so you can take the proper steps to treat the injury.

There are some common physical, mental, and emotional symptoms a person may display following a concussion. Any of these could be a sign of traumatic brain injury:

  • confusion or feeling dazed
  • clumsiness
  • slurred speech
  • nausea or vomiting
  • headache
  • balance problems or dizziness
  • blurred vision
  • sensitivity to light
  • sensitivity to noise
  • sluggishness
  • ringing in ears
  • behaviour or personality changes
  • concentration difficulties
  • memory loss

If you think you or someone you know may have a concussion it is important that you seek medical attention. A health care professional can decide how serious the concussion is and whether you require treatment.

Q: MANY RIDERS WEAR THEIR HAIR PUT UP UNDER THEIR HELMETS. DOES THIS COMPROMISE THE FIT OR SAFETY?

We are frequently asked if putting your hair up under your helmet compromises the fit of the helmet or its ability to protect the rider’s head. It is important to wear a snug but comfortably fitting helmet that won’t move excessively while riding.

Q: HOW MUCH FORCE DOES IT TAKE FOR THE EXTERIOR OF ONE OF YOUR HELMETS TO DENT OR CRACK?

The force required to crack a helmet must be understood in several dimensions:

  1. A) There is the focus of the force. Is it very focused such as would occur when landed against a pointed rock, or flat surface such as against an arena dirt floor.
  2. B) The duration of the force. Is it very fast and brief (a fall from a great height) or slower (in milliseconds) such as when a horse kicks the helmet.
  3. C) The actual energy involved is estimated of a force to be above 200Gs to crack a shell.
  4. D) The temperature of the shell will affect the performance.
  5. E) Analysing the degree of damage to the EPS that lies under the broken shell also gives us an estimate of the energies involved. Your helmet is designed to give up its structure in order to absorb very high energies. Whenever a shell cracks during a fall, the energies are typically high enough that they would have caused a brain injury without a helmet to absorb these energies.
Q: DOES THE ARMIS HELMET MEET THE NOCSAE ND 050 STANDARD?

Scientific research has demonstrated that the risk of skull fracture and serious head injury increases dramatically once the head experiences linear acceleration forces that exceed 300 g’s. A properly worn helmet can reduce the force transferred to the wearer’s head during an impact, thereby lowering the risk of skull fracture and other serious head injuries that could occur while playing polo.

The Armis Helmet is certified to the British Standard PAS 015: 2011 that requires the linear acceleration forces to the helmet to be below an average of 225g therefore the helmet has been design to this standard so it can be used in a number of equestrian disciplines including Pony Club. We have chosen not to test or certify to NOCSAE ND 050 Standard as we believe the British Standard is the most suitable standard at this point in time.

Q: DOES ARMIS COME WITH A FACEGUARD?

With regards to faceguard, Armis does not currently offer any further accessories. However it is known that other clients have fitted other faceguards on. Ultimately this is a personal choice.

Using top end glasses/goggles is a good choice as the eyes are very vulnerable. Most players tend to opt for this as you have better visibility than a faceguard as well as being protected.

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS?
